Capturing Timeless Moments at Great Lodge: A Spring Wedding

Great Lodge sits in the Essex countryside outside Great Bardfield. This 16th-century estate boasts a Grade I listed barn, a working vineyard, and grounds that make any photographer pause in awe. Here, architecture, landscape, and light unite to create a perfect backdrop. Thomas and Michael's spring wedding showcased all of this beauty.

Getting Ready at the Lodge

Both Thomas and Michael prepared for their big day at the venue. They arrived at 9 AM, and the morning unfolded at a leisurely pace. There’s a unique quality to getting-ready photographs when a couple is in the same building. They are not together yet, but the anticipation hangs in the air.

Great Lodge's accommodations are nestled in converted barns and stables. The morning light filters through the windows, casting a soft glow across rooms steeped in history. I captured moments like Thomas opening a gift from Michael and the bridesmaids gathered in the bridal suite. There’s a stillness in the air, especially when a groom is alone with his thoughts before everything changes.

The Walled Garden — Ceremony

The ceremony took place at 2:30 PM in the walled garden. The main house stood behind them, and the lily pond mirrored the May sky. Ancient brick walls held the warmth of the afternoon sun.

In May, the walled garden at Great Lodge is breathtaking. A formal lawn is flanked by established plantings, with the main house reflected in the lily pond. The ancient brick walls trap the warmth of an afternoon that embodies everything a spring wedding should be.

Thomas and Michael had nine people in their wedding party. The bridesmaids in powder blue walked the gravel path ahead of the grooms. Flower girls with wicker baskets led the way to the ceremony space. The ceremony lasted from 2:30 to 3:15 PM. Within those 45 minutes, moments of genuine stillness emerged—the exchange of vows, the first reading, and the groom's expression as his partner approached.

The outdoor setting allowed every image to capture the sky—deep May blue, the kind of Essex afternoon that arrives unexpectedly and lingers just long enough for perfect photographs.

Grounds and Vineyard Portraits

After the ceremony, guests moved outside into the grounds while Thomas and Michael slipped away for portraits.

The grounds at Great Lodge offer endless portrait options. The vineyard, apple orchard, romantic swing under the willow tree, lake, and fields with seasonal crops create a stunning backdrop. In spring, the vineyard begins to show growth. Rows of vines catch the afternoon light, with the walled garden behind them and the house visible through the orchard.

These portraits are not posed in the conventional sense. They are made portraits, crafted from an understanding of how light moves through a landscape at a specific time of year. They capture what happens when two people are given space to simply be together, free from the weight of a room full of guests.

The Wedding Breakfast and Speeches

At 4:45 PM, guests moved into the barn for dinner. The Anne of Cleves Barn transforms into a different space from the walled garden. It feels warmer and louder. Catering was provided by Splinters, with the cake crafted by Chloe at Brown's Bakes and flowers arranged by Karen. The styling and signage by Simply Rustic added a handmade quality that complements Great Lodge's charm—nothing too polished, nothing that clashes with the aged timber and original stonework.

Speeches began at 6:45 PM. Five speakers shared their thoughts, weaving together the day’s narrative. From the best man Tony to the maid of honour Collette, each voice added a layer to the portrait of Thomas and Michael that the photographs had been building throughout the day.

Cocktail Hour, First Dance, and The Upstanding

Evening guests arrived at 7:15 PM. With them came a shift in the day’s energy. The room suddenly felt fuller and louder, the temperature rising.

The cocktail hour preceded the first dance, an unusual sequence that allowed the couple a moment to breathe between the day’s formality and the evening’s celebration. At 8 PM, the cake was cut, and Thomas and Michael took the floor together for their first dance as a married couple.

Then came The Upstanding—a live band whose presence in a space like the Anne of Cleves Barn is something photographs can only partially capture. The acoustics of a 16th-century agricultural building, the warmth of a crowd celebrating since early afternoon, and the joy of two people who have spent the day at the center of attention finally letting themselves disappear into the moment.

Trina Read sang during the day, and DJ Eddie from Amp & Decks carried the evening through to midnight.
